Book Series Wednesday: The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne

Coming off last week’s post about The Dresden Files, I figured I’d stick to some Urban Fantasy that anyone can get into for a while before going into my favorite genre Fantasy Epics. Though with next week’s release of Words of Radiance, I may have to make a special exception for that.

Anyways I love this series almost as much as I do the Dresden Files.

Summary for Book One: Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old—when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.

Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries.

Characters: I freaking love the characters in this series, they made me laugh just as much as The Dresden Files does. Oberon, Atticus’ dog is freaking hilarious. Atticus himself is just a freaking bad ass, and is completely different than what I thought he’d be like. The series, like The Dresden Files, takes a lot from Mythology and popular culture. It even references Battlestar Galactica in the first chapter if I remember correctly.

Plot: Pretty good, not as good as The Dresden Files, but better than some of the other Urban Fantasy series I’ve read like Elemental Assassin, though that isn’t a bad series by any means. It has it’s humorous moments, usually involving Oberon; and it has it’s serious moments usually involving Atticus and later other characters being complete badasses in combat.

In terms of must reads before die: I rate it highly on a book series you should read, simply because of all the humor that comes along with the action makes it worth reading.

For those who like: Action and lots of it, Mythology come to life in the modern world, Badasses on both sides of confict, a freaking talking dog that makes snarky comments about humans.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above, and if that’s the case you suck cause who doesn’t like a talking dog that makes snarky comments about people?

  1. I’ve been meaning to read the Dresden Files for a while now (I know that isn’t what you’re reviewing, but it’s obviously a favorite of yours ;))

Seeing as you’re into urban fantasy/epic fantasy with a lot of action, I wanted to invite you over to my blog to check out my book, Silence, for free. It’s a sci-fi/urban fantasy cross-over with a *lot* of action (I’m starting to think the story was inspired by DBZ… except, with more complex characters).

Sidenote: if you found the time to review my work, I would be super, super, super grateful! But there’s no obligation of course; everything is up on my blog. No cliff-hanger ending, or anything.
