Retro Game Friday: Banjo-Tooie [Spoilers for Banjo-Kazooie]

This week I’m covering the best non-Sonic platformer I think I’ve ever played, take that Mario, it’s Banjo-Tooie! Spoilers after the jump.

Plot Synopsis: Following from where Banjo-Kazooie left off, Banjo and Kazooie defeat Gruntilda and escape Gruntilda’s lair after they rescue Banjo’s sister, Tooty, from her clutches in the previous game. Gruntilda is then sent hurtling towards Spiral Mountain and is buried alive under a boulder. Two years have passed since the assumed defeat. While Banjo and Kazooie are playing poker with their friends Mumbo Jumbo and Bottles, Gruntilda’s sisters Mingella and Blobbelda arrive in a large digging machine, the Hag 1. They destroy the boulder and free Gruntilda with a magical spell. Unfortunately Gruntilda’s time spent underground rotted her flesh away and reduced her to a skeleton. Seeking revenge, Gruntilda destroys Banjo’s house before fleeing with her sisters. Banjo, Kazooie, and Mumbo exit the house, but Bottles gets caught in the magical blast and is killed. The three remaining friends decide to put an end to Gruntilda’s plans, but swear to track her down.

Plot: It’s even more ridiculous than the first game, as poor Bottles is killed and the goal is revive him.

Gameplay: I remember really enjoying the gameplay, especially with the ability that turned Kazooie into a freaking Dragon.

Music: It was just as great as the first game.

Art: Ditto for the art.

Overall: If you enjoy the good Rareware games this is one of the last good ones they ever made.

For those who like: Platformers, Puzzles, Adventure Games, Rareware, Nintendo Games, Banjo-Kazooie.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
