Anime Sunday: Mekaku City Actors

This week for Anime Sunday I’m covering a series that was all started from something rather unusual. It’s Mekaku City Actors the anime portion of the multimedia Kagerou Project.

Plot Synopsis: Shintarō Kisaragi is an 18-year old hikiNEET who has not left his room in two years, engrossing himself with his computer and the internet. However, on August 14, due to the messing about of the cyber girl Ene, who lives inside his computer, Shintarō spills soda on his computer keyboard and is forced to go outside to buy a new one, due to the fact that during the Obon festival none of the stores will deliver until August 17. Shintarō goes to the department store, where a group of criminals break in and hold the people inside hostage for ransom.

Plot: It’s fairly confusing, almost as much as Durarara or Baccano was. However it’s got a pretty intense plot once you get past the first episode.

Characters: Of all the characters I like Ene the most, but that’s probably because I’m partial to the color blue. Shintaro grows up the most out of all the characters though, with Merry being close behind.

Art: The artwork is done by Shaft, of Monogatari and Madoka Magica fame. Expect plenty of hard lines and odd coloring.

Music: The Kagerou project started out as a series of doujin (what we would call indie here in the west) songs written and composed by Jin. He’s gotten some pretty big names to help out with singing the songs that inspired this whole thing, including MARiA from GARNiDELiA and Haruna Luna. The music for this series is pretty amazing, in fact I enjoy it as much as the plot.

Overall: If you’ve never heard the music, try watching the first couple of episodes.

For those who like: Urban Fantasy, Mystery, Amazing music, Excellent Art, Great Characters.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above, but can you really hate all of that?
