Shoujo Saturday: Kono Shima by Hara Tsumoi

For this week’s Shoujo Saturday I’m covering a series I literally just read through today (the day I’m writing this) and was floored by how good it was, despite being a horror series. It’s Kono Shima ni wa Midara de Jaaku na Mono ga Sumu, or Indecent Things Live on this Island in English, by Hara Tsumoi!

Plot Synopsis: Taro Kajiura and his friends from the same folklorist research group at Tonan University went on a trip to Ikishima island in order to pursue the origins of the myth about princess Kwannon. At the same time the villagers of Ikishima were holding the annual festival in which outsiders were forbidden to participate in since 400 years. The consequences for breaking that rule were more severe that anyone had imagined…

Plot: The plot is very serious and sort of screwed up, but it’s very thrilling and pretty good. That being said there are some very seriously messed up subjects covered in this series, including rape and slavery so fair warning. Thankfully Kajiura isn’t the perpetrator in any of it, but it’s still a bit dicey for those who aren’t comfortable with those subjects.

Characters: The cast is pretty good, but since the series has just started it’s not very expanded yet. I hope it’ll grow over time.

Art: The art is great, and it fits the series perfectly.

Overall: If you like Psychological Thrillers this is the series for you.

For those who like: Psychological Thrillers, Romance, Horror, Supernatural Stories, Great Plot, Good Cast of Characters, Excellent Artwork.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
