Sensate Saturday: Tokyo Ghoul by Sui Ishida

This week for Sensate Saturday I’m covering a series I despise, but since other’s won’t stop pestering me to cover it I’m going over it anyways. It’s Tokyo Ghoul by Sui Ishida!

Plot Synopsis: The story follows Ken Kaneki, a college student who barely survives a deadly encounter with Rize Kamishiro, his date who reveals herself as a ghoul, a human-like creature that hunts and devours human flesh, and is taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Plot: The plot is medicore, and while I love a good anti-hero protagonist, this series makes me feel only disgust for pretty much everything about it. This series is gory, disturbing and just flat out wrong to me personally. It has Cannibalism, among many other things that I just can’t stand for. The action scenes are the only decent thing about it, but since I can’t stand the characters in this series except for one occasionally I just don’t care enough after reading up to current release in Japan a year ago.

Characters: Kaneki is a whiny bum, that’s how I can best describe him as I see him. The only decent character in the entire series is Touka and that’s because she’s not wallowing in self pity or self aggrandizement. She deals with the life she was given and continues living. I hate pretty much every other character, and Touka is only decent in my book.

Art: Fits the series well, and I guess that’s the only really good thing about the series, it has the artwork to go along with the plot even if it only makes more disturbed and disgusted.

Overall: Some people love this series, I am not one of them. If you can deal with a mediocre plot and severely disturbing topics you may be able to stomach reading past the third chapter.

For those who like: Horror, Action, Romance?

Not for those who don’t like: Regurgitating their stomachs out every other chapter.
