Manga Monday: Kono Onee-san wa Fiction Desu? by Tsutomu Mutsuki

This week on Manga Monday I’m reviewing one of my favorite Romantic Comedy Seinen series, Kono Onee-san wa Fiction Desu? by Tsutomu Mustuki. It’s also called “Is this girl for real?”, but I prefer to use the Japanese title.

Plot Synopsis: Late one night when Jun was out on his bike, he came across a drunk, half-naked girl sprawled on the side of the road. She came to be uncomfortably affectionate, but Jun took her to his home to sleep it off with gentlemanly discretion. It turns out that she is Kawase Narumi, his Mangaka (Manga artist/author) Mother’s new assistant. Unfortunately, she has no idea what she’s doing in her new job, so Jun’s going to have to coach her. He’s also going to have to deal with her habit of getting drunk, mostly naked, and cuddly. Jun’s life will never be the same!

Plot: Poor Narumi, she’s so clutzy and yet so likeable at the same time. While the Romantic Comedy genre isn’t a part of my usual reading selection I actually enjoy this series as it highlights the difficulties that go into making a Manga, something that another series called Bakuman does as well.

Characters: It’s fairly obvious that Narumi has a thing for Jun, who happens to like older women, but she’s constantly hampered by her inablity to perform her job and thus earns Jun’s ire for her inability. I actually enjoy the way the author deals with their relationship, because it strays less into Comedy and more into Romanticism.

Art: It’s a Seinen series so it has an art style that I generally enjoy. The linework and shading are always good, but not amazing.

Overall: If you enjoy Rom-coms than you may enjoy this series.

For those who like: Rom-com, A bit of fanservice, More drama than comedy in their Rom-coms, An decent insight into the life of a Mangaka.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
