TNT: Tips on How to Enjoy Web Serializations

This week for Translation Necessary Thursday I’m back with some tips and tricks. It’s some Tips on How to Enjoy Web Serializations!

Web Serializations?: What I generally cover in these columns are Web Serializations, what is known more commonly as Web Novels.

Ok so tips?: Yep I got a few really easy tips to get the most out of every Web Novel you read. This can hold true for any piece of written work, but I find that they are really great for Web Novels in particular.

Tip #1 Stockpile!: Let any Web Novel you read get a good amount of chapters built up before beginning to read. Give yourself at least 3 whole days worth of chapters to read, and by whole days I mean days where you would do nothing but read those chapters. For me that means I often have to wait for at minimum a stockpile of at least 250 chapters worth. I read much too quickly, and if I don’t stockpile at least that much I’m liable to just go through it too quick.

This is for chapters that come out to at least 2,000 words per chapter on average. If they are shorter that means I’ll need to increase the amount of chapters I stockpile. The same is true in reverse, if they are incredibly long chapters I can get away with less chapters.

Another way to stockpile is to do it based on Arc or Volume, if there are Arcs or volumes indicated in the table of contents it’s totally doable to just stockpile chapters until an arc or volume is completed. This allows the author to go through a relatively self contained plot thread from beginning to end.

Tip #2 Binge!: Once you’ve stockpiled enough chapters to get a few days worth of solid reading, binge read that story and it alone. Don’t read anything else, unless you are like me you’ll probably confuse yourself if you are reading more than a single story or if you’re really skilled two, at one time. So go through those chapters and enjoy the story.

Tip #3 Once Caught Up Stop Reading!: If you are reading a Web Novel you’ll come to realize that most of the story is so splintered into  small chapters that it’s really hard to appreciate the story if you continue reading every time a new chapter is released. Don’t do this, it’ll ruin the stories for you. Seriously it sounds counter intuitive, but absolutely do not continue reading once caught up. Follow Tips #1 and 2.

Tip #4 Rotate!: In order to allow all the above tips to occur I rotate stories I’ll read. Assuming all series release with similar amount of chapters per week, it’s easy to set up a rotation of different series to read in order to really get the most out of stories. In reality this can’t happen due to how different authors, and by extension translators, work. So you’ll need to build a vast library of different series in order to really get a solid rotation. This might end up being 20+ series, but you’ll be able to get a good amount of chapters stockpiled for binge reading for each series if you go through the rotation.

For me I’ll constantly add new series to my rotation and drop those which I’ve found to be not worth reading in comparison to other stories. I’ve stopped reading stories due to many reasons, sometimes I just find they are inferior to other similar stories and so I’ll drop them in favor of the other. There are plenty of other reasons as well, but the biggest is the one I just mentioned.

That’s it for this week’s Translation Necessary Thursday! Hopefully this helps those fellow enthusiasts of Web Novels, and other media, enjoy the stories more!

Bookish Wednesday: New Rules by Justin Miller

Hey all I’m back with the second entry in one of my new favorite LitRPG series for this week’s Bookish Wednesday. It’s the World Seed Series Book 02: New Rules by Justin Miller!

Plot Synopsis: Having discovered that upon returning to reality that he’s turned into his in game character and can use his in game magic from Neo Life, John Hulett also known as Falanel, a failure of a Half-Elf,  is dealing with the ever increasing mana that is now permeating Earth. What new adventures, or misadventures in his case, will he land into after he learns monsters are now spawning in the streets on Earth….

Plot: This is a much more serious entry, and while the comedy is still there, it’s also much more intense in terms of drama. That being said I still enjoyed the hell out of the book.

Characters: We get introduced to a couple new characters in this entry, but for the most part it’s still John, or Falanel, along with Celeste and Yin and Yang’s show. I can’t say who my favorite new character is due to spoilers, but the new additions were pretty awesome. Hopefully they show up in the later books as well.

Overall: If you love LitRPGs, or just laughing your head off and getting weird looks while walking down the street (hey don’t look at me like that), you’ll love this second entry in the World Seed Series.

TNT: Battle Through the Heavens Chapters 41-80 by Heavenly Silkworm Potato

This week for Translation Necessary Thursday I’m covering the second set of chapters in Xiao Yan’s quest for redemption. It’s Battle Through the Heavens Chapters 41-80 by Heavenly Silkworm Potato!

Plot Synopsis: In a land where no magic is present. A land where the strong make the rules and weak have to obey. A land filled with alluring treasures and beauty, yet also filled with unforeseen danger.  Three years ago, Xiao Yan, who had shown talents none had seen in decades, suddenly lost everything.  His achievements, his reputation, and his promise to his mother. What sorcery has caused him to lose all of his powers? And why has his fiancee suddenly shown up?

Plot: This is where the series really begins to take off, and while we don’t get to see Xiao Yan stomp all over everyone, he’s definitely redeeming himself slowly. I won’t say that this is the best set of chapters, because it’s not. If the first set interested you but didn’t get you hooked fully, this set of chapters ought to be another step towards that.

Characters: We don’t really get introduced to any new characters in this set of chapters.

Overall: This is a good second set of chapters, and while not the best series out there, there are much worse series you could read.

TNT: Battle Through the Heavens Chapters 1-40 by Heavenly Silkworm Potato

This week for Translation Necessary Thursday I’m covering the first set of chapters in a series I have yet to cover. It’s Battle Through the Heavens Chapters 1-40 by Heavenly Silkworm Potato!

His powers, his reputation, and his promise to his mother. What sorcery has caused him to lose all of his powers? And why has his fiancee suddenly shown up 3 since he lost it all?

Plot: The plot of this first set of chapters is pretty good, but slow. This is definitely a foundation building set of chapters.  That’s not a bad thing, since the entire series is 1648 chapters long and is complete, and although not completely translated yet we’ve reached the 700’s in English. It also shares the same universe as two other series by the author, Wu Dong Qian Kun and The Great Ruler. The Great Ruler in particular actually is a sequel to both, with characters from both Battle Through the Heavens and Wu Dong Qian Kun showing up in it for cameos.

Characters: Xiao Yan is probably one of my favorite main characters, for his snark, ruthlessness, and calm demeanor. He’s an excellent main character, and while not as roguish as other main characters I’ve covered before he is pretty good.  The rest of the cast is also great, although I think I enjoy Xun Er the most as a side character.

Overall: This is a great series, and is just a little under half translated, so you’ll have plenty of chapters to read.

For those who like: Xuanhuan, Fantasy, Martial Arts, Cultivation, Alchemy, Excellent Plot, Fantastic Set of Characters.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.

TNT: Peerless Martial God Chapters 121-160 by Jing Wu Hen

peerless_martial_god

This week for Translation Necessary Thursday I’m back with the fourth set of chapters in Lin Feng’s journey for strength. It’s Peerless Martial God Chapters 121-160 by Jing Wu Hen!

Plot Synopsis: Lin Feng survived the destruction of his sect, the Yun Hai Sect, and is one of a handful of survivors who didn’t betray the sect before it’s destruction. Unlike the rest though Lin Feng was entrusted with task of bringing the sect back to life when he became stronger and was given the Patriarch’s ring and position before being left in a secret area known only to the protectors of the sect. Overcome with grief at the death of so many of his fellow martial brothers and sisters he eventually leaves the secret temple and in the depths of the Black Wind Mountains he encounters a beautiful young woman who had no name. He named her Meng Qing and agreed to take her out into the outside world, in exchange for stories from his previous life. He encounters a friend, Jing Yun and her young friend Duan Feng, a scion of the Imperial family of Xue Yue. He saves them from bandits and assassins and brings them to the Celestial academy in the Imperial City, and ends up joining the Celestial Academy as a special student, with no strings attached.

Plot: These chapters show the rise of Lin Feng’s fame and power in the rest of the capitol and are probably the best chapters yet, I have to admit that the previous set of chapters were pretty depressing with the death of all the people who were kind to him in the Yun Hai sect except Jing Yun.

Characters:We get introduced to lots of new characters in these chapters, but Wen Ao Xue is my favorite newcomer, he’s mysterious and isn’t an ass just because he’s incredibly powerful. Lin Feng continues to impress, and Meng Qing is a total bad ass female lead as well.

Overall: If you weren’t hooked yet, these chapters show the best strengths of the series as a whole very well.

TNT: Martial World Chapters 81-120 by Cocooned Cow

lin_ming_fan_art_by_gamaa

Hey all I’m back with the third set of chapters in Lin Ming’s rise to power for this week’s Translation Necessary Thursday. It’s Martial World Chapters 81-120 by Cocooned Cow!

Plot Synopsis: Having attained a special state of cultivation, Lin Ming easily defeated Zhang Cang in their duel and he gained much needed medicine to further his growth as a warrior. Now however he’s made his enemy Zhu Yan even more nervous about his sudden growth. He’s also gained the attention of the higher ups from the Seven Profound Martial House that he is training at….

Plot: This is where the story really takes off, the first 80 chapters were a very slow start to the series, but from this point onward the story starts to liven up quite a bit. I won’t spoil anything, but if you weren’t pleased because of it’s slow start you’ll be very happy to know that from these chapters on the series only gets better.

Characters: We don’t get introduced to many newcomers in this set of chapters, but my favorite is probably Wang Chuhan, although she is pretty arrogant at first, she’s not too bad. Lin Ming stays a cool collected person and continues to get more interesting.

Overall: From these chapters on Martial World only gets better, the slow start to the previous chapters might have been off putting, but if you can get through them it’s well worth the wait.

TNT: My Beautiful Teacher Chapters 1-40 by Ram de Night

my_beautiful_teacher

This week for Translation Necessary Thursday I’m covering the first set of chapters in a series I just started reading the other day. It’s My Beautiful Teacher Chapters 1-40 by Ram de Night!

Plot Synopsis: Qin Chao can’t seem to find a job and is in a downward spiral in his life. Then one night as he walks home from another failed job interview, a vase hits his head, making him get possessed by an old and powerful evil spirit sealed in that vase. A series of adventures then took place as he deals with all kinds of supernatural beings.

Plot: The plot is pretty great, and the chapters are fairly long as well which is awesome for me, because I go through content quite quickly. That being said this is most definitely aimed at a more mature audience. Expect plenty of violence.

Characters: Qin Chao starts off as a loser, but that quickly changes, and that’s a good thing. He loves to break rules, and frankly I found that refreshing. I’m not against being honorable, but sometimes it can just get you into even more trouble. The rest of the cast is quite good, of them I think Li Na is my favorite side character thus far. Rosy is a close second though.

Overall: If you want a modern day Xianxia/Xuanhuan story, My Beautiful Teacher is perfect for you.

For those who like: Xianxia, Xuanhaun, Action, Violence, Drama, Romance, Modern Day Cultivation, Excellent Plot, Fantastic Cast of Characters.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
