Anime Sunday: Winners of Spring 2018

I’m back with a look at the past season for this week’s Anime Sunday. It’s my Winners of Spring 2018!

Golden Kamuy: I enjoyed this series, excepting for the awkward usage of some 3DCG artwork, the series was entertaining on a whole. Whether you will enjoy it is something I can’t tell you, but you might.

Hinamatsuri: This series was oddball enough to make me laugh, but not so slapstick that I couldn’t enjoy the comedy. That can sometimes be a fine line for me, but Hinamatsuri managed to pull it off fairly well.

Series I didn’t get a chance to look at this season, but mean to do so sometime soonish:

Devil’s Line: Being an Urban Fantasy romance series, this might be interesting. Or it could totally disgust me. We’ll see. I may make a post on this series.

That’s it for this week’s Anime Sunday.

Anime Sunday: Golden Kamuy Episode 01 Impressions

This week for Anime Sunday I’m back with another series from the latest season. It’s my Golden Kamuy Episode 01 Impressions!

Plot Synopsis: Russo-Japanese War veteran Sugimoto “Immortal” Saichi, pans for gold in Hokkaido to provide for his dead comrade Toraji’s widow. He learns that a man called Nopperabo has stolen a gold reserve from the Ainu people and killed those transporting it…

Plot: The plot is pretty good, but this follows the first chapter really closely so I wasn’t surprised much. That said it wasn’t a bad first episode, but it didn’t absolutely grab my attention like other series have before.

Characters: Saichi is a pretty interesting main character, he’s devoted to helping his dead friend’s wife, although the means he goes about doing so is somewhat questionable. Especially since I can’t imagine anything more hellish and depressing than panning for gold in the middle of winter. Asirpa our female lead is also very interesting, and the fact that she’s a capable young woman is just icing on the cake.

Art: Here’s where the major issue I had with this series is. The art is generally pretty good, but the very obvious use of 3D CG for the bear in this first episode is really distracting and absolutely destroys the immersion that I had up till that point. It’s a bummer, because if not for this major issue I might have chosen to watch the series as an Anime instead of waiting for the Manga to finish up before reading it.

Music: The music is alright, but not super special either.

Overall: An okay series, but there are some artistic issues that really ruin the experience of watching this first episode.

For those who like: Historical Fiction, Adventure, Drama.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above, or bad 3D CG.

Anime Sunday: Most Anticipated Spring 2018 Anime

This week for Anime Sunday I’m covering some of the new shows that’ll be airing this upcoming season. It’s my Most Anticipated Spring 2018 Anime!

Mahou Shoujo Ore: I have no freaking clue at all about what this show is about. All I know is it’s an adaptation of a Manga and that the title makes me really interested in seeing what’s going on. For those unaware, Ore is the distinctly male pronoun used be oneself. So the fact that the show is called Magical Girl Me (with a huge male undertone) makes me curious. It also reminds of Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? Which was a fairly amusing series on it’s own.

Golden Kamuy: I read the first chapter of this Manga a while back and was pretty interested. Now that it’s getting an Anime I’ll probably give this a shot. It’s definitely not for kids, as it’s got a very serious tone, but for those more mature Anime fans, this might be a good show to watch. We’ll see.

Honorable Mentions:

My Hero Academia Sesaon 3: I really need to watch the past two seasons as I’ve heard only great things about this series and I personally enjoyed the hell out of the early chapters of the original source material myself. So this is getting an Honorable Mention.

Persona 5: Again like My Hero Academia, I’ve only heard amazing things about Persona 5. I probably won’t personally watch this series until I get around to buying and playing the game. But I imagine fans of the game and Persona series in general will want to watch this.

That’s it for this week’s Anime Sunday. Any shows you are looking forward to you think I missed? Leave them in a comment below!

Manga Monday: Golden Kamui by Noda Satoru

Hey all, this week for Manga Monday I have another Quick Review. It’s Golden Kamui by Noda Satoru!

Plot Synopsis: In Hokkaido, the far northern lands of Japan, Sugimoto survived the Russo-Japanese war of the Meiji era. Nicknamed “Sugimoto the Immortal” during the war, he now seeks the riches promised by the gold rush in hopes of saving the widowed wife of his now deceased comrade from the war.

Plot: The plot is pretty awesome, I was pretty much instantly hooked after this first chapter, hopefully I’ll get to read all of it sooner rather then later. I do want to point out one more thing about the series, it is award winning, so take that how you will.

Characters: Sugimoto is a pretty interesting guy, it’s pretty obvious he’s dealing with serious issues from the war he fought in, despite all that he’s a pretty stable fellow. The rest of the cast we’ve met are pretty much nameless, but they look fairly interesting from this first chapter.

Art: The art is amazing, but once I looked up who the publisher was I wasn’t surprised to find it was Shueisha. That being said it is very graphic, so those with squeamish stomachs should probably not read this.

Overall: This has me hooked, so I’m going to give it the go ahead. Plus it’s an Award Winning series, it can’t be super terrible if it’s received an award.

For those who like: Historical Fiction, Military, Drama, Action, Adventure, Romance, Excellent Plot, Amazing Cast of Characters, Fantastic Artwork.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
