Synth Saturday: Too Many Champions Chapters 1-6 by Maschl

This week for Synth Saturday I’m back with another light hearted Fic. It’s Too Many Champions Chapters 1-6 by Maschl

Plot: This fic is an utter riot, and had me laughing outloud many times in these first few chapters. This Fic takes place in Year 4 of the Harry Potter series, so it should be familiar ground for those familiar with the series. The general premise is that Harry and Hermione decide to prank the hell out of everyone by placing multiple names in the Goblet of Fire including Voldemort. What follows is a very fun set of Harmony centric chapters where Hermione proves that most Wizard and Witches are stupid.

Characters: This is a Harmony fic as stated above, so it features Harry and Hermione getting romantically involved together. The rest of the cast is great as well, I particularly liked the characterization of Crouch Jr. It was hilarious.

Overall: A must read Fic for any Harry Potter fan.

For those who like: Harry Potter, Romance and Comedy without stupid drama, Hilarious Plots.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.

Synth Saturday: The Champion’s Champion Chapters 1-4 by Driftwood

This week for Synth Saturday I’m covering the first few chapters in a fic I found absolutely hilarious. It’s Harry Potter and The Champion’s Champion Chapters 1-4 by Driftwood!

Plot: This takes place during Year 4 and is mostly poking fun at the entire thing. The fact that it features one of my favorite pairs, Harry and Hermione, as the main romantic couple is just icing on the cake. I frankly laughed more when I read this Fic than I do with most professionally written novels. Fair warning this includes plenty of bashing towards Ron, which I’ve always felt he deserved although this takes it to a whole other level by making him an absolute idiot. Now granted that he is pretty stupid canonically, for example his greatest desire revealed by the Mirror of Erised is to be Head Boy and Quidditch Captain and he does absolutely nothing to earn it over the years at Hogwarts. Still this makes him to be a rather hilarious tool, in all senses of that word.

Characters: Harry and Hermione is probably one of my favorite pair of characters, and the fact Rowling never paired them up despite the nearly endless reasons to do so that she foreshadowed over the books is beyond me. So this particular Fic makes me very happy in how well they actually hook up. The rest of the cast is just as hilarious, with plenty of comedic relief coming in the form of various gags.

Overall: A must read for any Potter fan, that’s really all that needs to be said.

For those who like: Romance, Comedy, Harry and Hermione Pairing.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.

Sensate Saturday: Fantasy is the Highest Form of Fiction

Hey all I’m back this week for Sensate Saturday with a quick essay on my feelings about Fantasy. Fantasy is the Highest Form of Fiction, in my opinion!

What do you mean highest form?: I mean that if Fantasy is done correctly it’s the best genre in all of fiction. It serves the purpose of literature to allow readers to experience things they otherwise couldn’t, and while many contemporary fiction books cover rare or hard to experience situations and events, they aren’t out of the reach of people, just costly or impractical, or illegal.

Why?: Well if Fantasy is done correctly than no other genre of fiction can really take you to completely alien worlds and cultures. I’ll point to any of Brandon Sanderson’s many Cosmere works as shining examples of what I’m talking about, and they are also my personal gold standard for judging any and all books. The Cosmere novels completely take you away to worlds that just don’t exist, and yet they make sense to us and we can easily relate to the characters. Not many authors can achieve the mastery of the genre as well as Sanderson, and the masterful way he comes up with complete worlds, with customs, cultures, religions, magic and many other things is truly spectacular. That isn’t even including his incredible pace for writing either.

Why isn’t (Insert other Genre here) as good as Fantasy?: Because if done correctly it’s still a world that is Earth, or a culture we can relate to because of it being distinctly “Terran”. That isn’t to say there aren’t masterworks in other genres, I’m not arrogant enough to believe that and I personally love many other books that just aren’t in the Fantasy genre. The Harry Bosch series is one of my favorite series of all time and yet it’s completely grounded in American culture. Connelly pulls off amazing mysteries, but they just aren’t as unique or otherworldly as stuff Brandon Sanderson writes.

This is all of course my opinion as is everything else I write and personally I’d love to read other’s thoughts on the matter. Do you agree or disagree with my claim that Fantasy is the Highest Form of Fiction? Leave your comments down below.
