Anime Sunday: Death March Episode 01 Impressions

This week for Anime Sunday I’m covering another Winter 2018 series. It’s my Death March Episode 01 Impressions!

Plot Synopsis: Suzuki Ichiro is an adult programmer for a game company in Japan and is severely overworked. While on a Death March and staying at his company overnight he fell asleep. When he woke up he suddenly noticed that he was thrown into another world wearing casual clothes at level 1….

Plot: The plot is pretty good, the pacing is excellent so far. I am disappointed that the series will only have 12 episodes, but hopefully this is due to it being a split-cour series instead of just a single cour in total. There are some differences from the Web Novel, but since I haven’t read the actual Light Novel yet, I don’t know if those are editorial changes or purely due to the Anime adaptation.

Characters: Ichiro is a pretty awesome guy, although he is seriously overworked. I absolutely understand how he feels as I’ve felt that way before when in college, thankfully these days I don’t have that problem. We don’t really get to meet anyone else in the Other World, although we did get to meet a couple of his co-workers in Japan. Fatty is a bit of an ass though…

Art: The art is great, although not up to ufotable quality it’s pretty damn good. Silver Link has done a great job.

Music: The score is pretty amazing,  as a bonus the theme songs are performed by girls from the Wake Up Girls! franchise.

Overall: A great first episode, if they can keep the pacing of this first episode which seems to be a fourth of a volume long.

For those who like: Isekai, Fantasy, Magic, Adventure, Excellent Lead Character, Good Artwork, Awesome Musical Score.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.

Hey all, I’m back with the 8th arc in Satou’s leisure tour in another world for this week’s Translation Necessary Thursday. It’s Death March Volume 08 by Ainana Hiro!

Plot: Having defeated a demon king in the duchy capital, stopped a coup, and helped resurrect a local priestess who was used as a sacrifice, Satou is finally entering the city with his companions. But what waits inside is more than he was expecting, even after halting the recent coup attempt…

Plot: This is a fun set of chapters, we get to see Satou cement his noble status and he interacts with some really interesting people while staying in the duchy capital. I won’t spoil it, but we get a glance at some other real badasses in this arc. That being said I was amused at all the crap Satou has to deal with while trying to just enjoy a leisurely vacation.

Characters: We get a lot of new faces in this arc, but it’s still Satou’s show. Nana is probably my favorite side character at this point, if only because her way of speaking is highly amusing.

Overall: An amusing and relaxing set of chapters, not so filled with action as the last set. It’s a nice change of pace.

This week I’m back with the seventh volume in Satou’s journey in another world for Translation Necessary Thursday. It’s Death March Volume 07 by Ainana Hiro!

Plot Synopsis: Satou and Company slowly enter the territory of Muno, and quickly find that the entire region is in chaos due to a demon. He encounters starving villagers and children and helps them out. A few days later he saves a couple and their child from some thieves. They agree to escort the pair, Toruma and his wife Hayuna, to the capitol of the territory, where Toruma’s cousin is the Earl. Satou quickly becomes aware that it will soon become dangerous in the area and sends the majority of his party away to safety while keeping Pochi and Arisa with him. He ends up saving the entire territory and ends up becoming an honorary knight, and is now known as Chevalier Pendragon.

Plot: This arc of chapters continues with their journey and has Satou performing some really outlandish feats again. Frankly this is probably one of my favorite arcs.

Characters: We get introduced to some new characters, but my favorite is probably Sera because of how kind she is. Satou is still Satou though and is going through his journey with as much leisure as he possibly can.

Overall: A great arc, if you aren’t reading the series yet you really ought to give it a shot.

This week for Translation Necessary Thursday I’m back with the sixth arc of Satou’s adventures. It’s Death March Volume 06 by Ainana Hiro!

Plot Synopsis: Having added Mia and Nana to their group, Satou and company finally set off for adventures after a brief return to Seryuu City in order to determine what to do with Mia. Having decided to head towards the homeland of the Elves where Mia grew up, Satou sets off again and begins trying to learn how to chant for magic.

Plot: This is a pretty long arc/volume it’s much longer than any previous arc so expect plenty of action, drama, and Satou getting surrounded by girls vying for his attention.

Characters: We really get to meet Mia and Nana for the first time in this arc, and I have to admit that I enjoy Nana quite a bit, she’s very funny in her speech patterns. Arisa and Mia hit it off and proceed to make life for Satou difficult. We get to meet some new characters as well, Karina probably being my favorite of the new ones, although she is a bit ditzy.  The rest of the newcomers are all great though.

Overall: An excellent and very satisfying arc, if you weren’t hooked by this point, this arc has everything in it that makes Death March such a great series.

This week for Translation Necessary Thursday I’m back with the fifth entry of Satou’s sightseeing adventures in another world. It’s Death March Volume 05 by Ainana Hiro!

Plot Synopsis: Finally prepared to leave on his sightseeing tour Satou and his group of girls are all packed up and ready to leave Seryuu City behind them, leaving Zena behind since she’s still in service to the lord of the city.

Plot: This volume is full of action especially compared to the last volume where there was almost no action whatsoever. That all being said these set of chapters really get us out into the new world Satou found himself in and we get to learn a bit more of the world and what is really going on here with all these various heroes.

Characters: We get introduced to a couple new faces this entry, with Nana and Mia being the main newcomers to Satou’s party of adventurers. I have to say that I really liked all the interactions Satou had with Pochi and Tama over the course of this volume, although all of his interactions with his group were pretty great.

Overall: This is an excellent volume and continues to strengthen the fact that Death March is a wonderful series.

I’m back with another volume of Satou’s sightseeing adventures for this week’s Translation Necessary Thursday. It’s Death March Volume 04 by Ainana Hiro!

Plot Synopsis: Having acquired another pair of girls from a slaver in Seryuu City Satou is finally ready to go off and sight see in this other world with his new companions except they need some supplies first…

Plot: This volume, in the web novel, is pretty slow, but after all the action we got in the last two volumes I’m okay with that. It really helped out the world building of this series. That being said if you were expecting lots of action you will be disappointed in this volume.

Characters: We really get to meet Arisa and Lulu in these chapters, and we get more of Satou and Zena flirting. Oh and Liza, Pochi and Tama are adorable. The rest of the cast is good too, but those named above are the real stars and it’s nice to see them get a break from all the action of the last two volumes.

Overall: These chapters are a breather from the fast paced and hectic action of the previous two volumes, so those who want nonstop action will be disappointed. That being said these chapters really help build up the world of Death March so I enjoyed them a bunch.

This week for Translation Necessary Thursday I’ve got the third volume of one of my favorite series. It’s Death March Volume 03 by Ainana Hiro!

Plot Synopsis: Having travelled to Seryuu City and encountered and then slain a Demon, Satou had been touring around the town with a local soldier, Zena who he rescued from a tree after the Demon Attack. Seeing a trio of Beastkin girl slaves being abused by a priest who wanted to stir up trouble, they step in to save the trio. However the priest had been influenced by the remaining arm of the Demon that Satou had slain earlier and when it was done with the host it proceeded to generate a labyrinth full of monsters. Satou sent Zena to get help, and he and the Beastkin girls team up to exit the labyrinth. He becomes their new owner and names them Liza, Pochi and Tama. Encountering a couple others he finally escapes the labryinth only to be intercepted by a missile named Zena…

Plot: This volume/arc is focused almost completely on the aftermath of the previous volume. That being said it’s not completely focused on that, we get to meet a few new characters, and we finally get to understand a bit more about the world Satou ended up. This is a pretty solid set of chapters, although it’s lacking in action scenes.

Characters: We get introduced to a couple new people, mostly Arisa and Lulu. Frankly Arisa is a bit of a creeper, but she’s not too bad. Lulu on the other hand is a pretty shy character, hopefully she opens up a bit more in future volumes.

Overall: This is a great volume, if a bit lacking in the action department.
