Anime Sunday: Winners of 2018

 

This week for Anime Sunday I’m back with a post that is very overdue. It’s my Winners of 2018 post.

TenSura: I loved the original Web Novel of this series, and seeing it animated on screen was a real treat. It had awesome pacing, excellent voice acting, awesome animation although not quite at ufotable level of quality, and an excellent plot. If you haven’t given TenSura a try yet you really ought to give at least the first few episodes a chance. You’ll most likely be very pleasantly surprised.

Emiya-san: I’m always a sucker for Fate adaptations, but the fact that this is a non action oriented series that had some of my favorite characters of all time just eating good food and that it’s animated by my gold standard studio ufotable were what put Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family on this list.

SeiButa: I found this series to be rather interesting, with just enough supernatural to pique my interest and keep it. The fact that the romance doesn’t stray into the dreaded typical Japanese Harem with a dense MC scenario (like Nisekoi, Love Hina, or any of a number of other series) was just icing on the cake.

Anime Sunday: Tensura Episode 01 Impressions

Hey all I’m back with another new series for this week’s Anime Sunday. It’s my Tensura Episode 01 Impressions!

Plot: This first episode is pretty focused on the Mikami’s life in Modern Day Japan, and while it does get us to the first big plot point it’s taking it’s time. So those wanting a ton of action will probably be disappointed. I wasn’t one of those people however as I’m really happy they’re taking a slow pace with the series and doing the story justice. I will admit I’ve read the Light Novels this is adapted from, and seeing it take such a slow pace when compared to the frenetic pace other adaptations have done in the past is really good.

Characters: Mikami is a pretty standard dude, honestly he’s kind of boring. Thankfully the rest of the story will make up for that, and Veldora was awesome to see in the Anime. Veldora was a very fun character. We don’t get to meet much of the cast though, but since it’s just the first episode that’s okay.

Art: The art is pretty awesome, and while it’s not ufotable quality Studio 8-Bit did a pretty darn good job.

Music: The music is okay, but it’s not that intense in this first episode so who knows how the rest of the series will handle music.

Overall: An excellent adaptation, with good pacing and excellent artwork.

For those who like: Isekai, Tensei, Fantasy, Magic, Drama, Action, Adventure,Awesome Plot, Great Cast of Characters, Outstanding Artwork, Good Music.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.

Anime Sunday: Most Anticipated Fall 2018 Anime

This week for Anime Sunday I’m back with a look at the upcoming season of Anime, and sorry it’s a bit late in coming. It’s my Most Anticipated Fall 2018 Anime!

Seishun Buta Yarou: Normally I try to stay clear of Romantic Comedy series, but this one caught my attention with the supernatural genre tag. Hopefully it doesn’t devolve into some of the worse romantic comedy pitfalls, as I really want to like this series.

Tensei Shittara Slime: This is an adaptation of an Isekai/Tensei novel series and it actually gets pretty intense despite the comical nature the art series depicts. I’m hoping the Anime doesn’t rush the pacing and we get more than a single cour.

Index Season 3: I’ve always loved the Toaru series, although the fact that Touma is incredibly obvlious to the affections of the girls he seems to attract like crazy is more than annoying. The fact that there’s an in-universe explanation that actually makes sense for that phenomenon is part of why I love this series though as it’s series that makes you think and has logical, if supernatural, reasons for just about everything that happens. Maybe we’ll get to the big war arc in this season, though I’m doubtful of that.

Radiant: I know only one thing about this series, and that’s the fact that this an adaptation of a Manga written and drawn by a Frenchman. Due to the highly isolationist nature of Japanese culture anything that can make them include a foreigner’s work into one of their bigger markets is always noteworthy and I’m looking forward to checking this series out. If I’m disappointed I won’t be too upset, but I hope that this series proves to be good.

Honorable Mention:

Sword Art Online III: This is the third season of a popular series, but hugely overrated in my opinion. I’ve heard it will last 52 episodes (4 Cours worth of episodes), and given that the Alicization Arc that this is supposed to cover in it’s entirety is like 8 volumes long and the longest arc in the series to date, I wouldn’t be at all surprised for that to be true. I’ll probably binge watch the entire thing once it’s completely done, but until then this only gets an honorable mention.

Goblin Slayer: This is a Dark Fantasy series, and I tend to stay away from those these days, but I can hope they do a good job adapting the series from the Light Novels.
