TNT: The King’s Avatar Chapters 41-80 by Butterfly Blue

This week for Translation Necessary Thursday I’m covering the second set of chapters in Ye Xiu’s adventures. It’s  The King’s Avatar Chapters 41-80 by Butterfly Blue!

Plot Synopsis: In the online game Glory, Ye Xiu is regarded as a textbook and a top-tier pro-player. However, due to a myriad reasons, he is kicked from the team. After leaving the professional scene, he finds work in an Internet Cafe as a manager. When Glory launches its tenth server, he who possesses ten years of gaming experience once again throws himself into the game. Bringing with him the memories of his past and an incomplete, self-made weapon, his return along the road to the summit begins!

After fighting and scheming, who snatched away my glory? Under the tossing of the wind and rain, my dreams shall still appear as though they had never been shattered. In all its splendor, the path shall never be lost. Before the gazes of millions, this is where I return!

Plot: The plot in this second set of chapters picks up the pace, so it’s not nearly as boring as some of the chapters in the first set. That being said if you didn’t like the first set, you probably won’t enjoy the second set either. It’s mostly about Ye Xiu getting Lord Grim’s weapon upgraded via selling his services as a top tier player.

Characters: We get introduced to a few newcomers, but really the spotlight is still all on Ye Xiu and Lord Grim. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing though.

Overall: This was a decent set of chapters, but if you weren’t already hooked it won’t necessarily get you hooked.

TNT: Battle Through the Heavens Chapters 1-40 by Heavenly Silkworm Potato

This week for Translation Necessary Thursday I’m covering the first set of chapters in a series I have yet to cover. It’s Battle Through the Heavens Chapters 1-40 by Heavenly Silkworm Potato!

Plot Synopsis: In a land where no magic is present. A land where the strong make the rules and weak have to obey. A land filled with alluring treasures and beauty, yet also filled with unforeseen danger.  Three years ago, Xiao Yan, who had shown talents none had seen in decades, suddenly lost everything.  His powers, his reputation, and his promise to his mother. What sorcery has caused him to lose all of his powers? And why has his fiancee suddenly shown up 3 since he lost it all?

Plot: The plot of this first set of chapters is pretty good, but slow. This is definitely a foundation building set of chapters.  That’s not a bad thing, since the entire series is 1648 chapters long and is complete, and although not completely translated yet we’ve reached the 700’s in English. It also shares the same universe as two other series by the author, Wu Dong Qian Kun and The Great Ruler. The Great Ruler in particular actually is a sequel to both, with characters from both Battle Through the Heavens and Wu Dong Qian Kun showing up in it for cameos.

Characters: Xiao Yan is probably one of my favorite main characters, for his snark, ruthlessness, and calm demeanor. He’s an excellent main character, and while not as roguish as other main characters I’ve covered before he is pretty good.  The rest of the cast is also great, although I think I enjoy Xun Er the most as a side character.

Overall: This is a great series, and is just a little under half translated, so you’ll have plenty of chapters to read.

For those who like: Xuanhuan, Fantasy, Martial Arts, Cultivation, Alchemy, Excellent Plot, Fantastic Set of Characters.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.

TNT: Qidian International

This week for Translation Necessary Thursday I’m going to voice my thoughts on the new venture by Qidian. It’s all about Qidian International!

Qidian International?: Yes, the Chinese Web Novel publishing website launched an English Website with a bunch of their novels free to read. It’s pretty amazing and is a huge benefit to the community, although there are some problems.

Problems?: Well for one some of the translators aren’t keeping to their posted schedules, which is disappointing, but doubly so since it’s now on an official website by the Chinese Publisher. Also the website itself has some major flaws in my opinion. While you can log in, and currently this feature is behind an invitation code that is randomly being given out. and track what chapter you were on, the chapters themselves are all on an infinite (read: a single page that gets longer as you scroll down) page. Each chapter isn’t in their own distinct and separate page, which is a major disservice to everyone.

Why is it a disservice?: Well if you are like me and read on an older tablet or phone, you probably experience your browser app crashing every once in a while. Sure the Log In and Track feature is nice, but for those of us who don’t want the hassle of keeping logged in when the browser app might crash and automatically log you back out, it’s a pain in the butt. Frankly I’d love to continue reading the series that moved to Qidian International, but until they implement a single page for each chapter with links to previous and next chapters at the bottom and top of the page, I’ll have to avoid using the website.  Hopefully this happens soon. If you are like me and want this feature please send them a suggestion to their email suggestion@qidian.com!

That’s it for this Translation Necessary Thursday!

TNT: Death March Volume 08 by Ainana Hiro

death_march

Hey all, I’m back with the 8th arc in Satou’s leisure tour in another world for this week’s Translation Necessary Thursday. It’s Death March Volume 08 by Ainana Hiro!

Plot: Having defeated a demon king in the duchy capital, stopped a coup, and helped resurrect a local priestess who was used as a sacrifice, Satou is finally entering the city with his companions. But what waits inside is more than he was expecting, even after halting the recent coup attempt…

Plot: This is a fun set of chapters, we get to see Satou cement his noble status and he interacts with some really interesting people while staying in the duchy capital. I won’t spoil it, but we get a glance at some other real badasses in this arc. That being said I was amused at all the crap Satou has to deal with while trying to just enjoy a leisurely vacation.

Characters: We get a lot of new faces in this arc, but it’s still Satou’s show. Nana is probably my favorite side character at this point, if only because her way of speaking is highly amusing.

Overall: An amusing and relaxing set of chapters, not so filled with action as the last set. It’s a nice change of pace.

TNT: Martial World Chapters 121-160 by Cocooned Cow

This week for Translation Necessary Thursday I’m back with the fourth set of chapters in Lin Ming’s quest for supremacy. It’s Martial World Chapters 121-160 by Cocooned Cow!

Plot Synopsis: Having successfully defeated Zhu Yan and further cemented his place as a rising star of the Seven Profound Martial House, Lin Ming sets out to improve his Inscription technique by doing odd jobs at the nearby Inscription Association. However clouds are brewing and his rising glory is leading to some powerful figures becoming nervous at his rapid rise in power.

Plot: This is a less action filled set of chapters than the previous one, but it doesn’t mean it’s not interesting. This is a set of chapters that lets us see some more intricate martial forms and techniques and how Lin Ming is a complete masochist when it comes to training. It’s even a chapter title….

Characters: We get introduced to a few new characters, but Qin Ziya is probably my favorite one. That being said the rest of the newcomers are all “interesting”.

Overall: A less action packed set of chapters, but still a fun read.

1096 Days!

third_anniversary

Hey all I’m interrupting your regularly scheduled Retro Game Friday to write this instead. It’s been three years, or 1096 days, since I started writing daily without missing a single day. I’ve gone through deaths in my family, moving, getting sick for over a month, and various other forms of distraction for the past three years. I’ve had a blast writing and will continue to do so, but I wanted to state some of the new things that I’ve been doing in the past year.

Tor: Last year, shortly after my 2nd year of non stop writing, I received a group email with some of my fellow writers at GiN from Tor the big sci-fi/fantasy American publisher and I’ve since started doing reviews for them in addition to the reviews I’ve been doing with Audible. I alternate between the two formats, with occasional breaks for a indie author’s book. If you haven’t been looking at them I highly suggest you give them a read. I’ve been submitting them nearly weekly for the past year, so there is plenty of content for you to enjoy.

Video Game Reviews: I’ve been continuing to receive various video games to review, most of them indie games. Some of them have been great, most haven’t been. I also get some AAA games, like Destiny’s “expansions” and various JRPG/Anime related games. I hope to continue doing these, and you’ll be able to read them at gameindustry.com as well. Just so long as they don’t make me vomit like Coffin Dodgers did. Ugh…

That’s it for this post, next week it’ll be back to Retro Game Friday!

TNT: Death March Volume 07 by Ainana Hiro

death_march

This week I’m back with the seventh volume in Satou’s journey in another world for Translation Necessary Thursday. It’s Death March Volume 07 by Ainana Hiro!

Plot Synopsis: Satou and Company slowly enter the territory of Muno, and quickly find that the entire region is in chaos due to a demon. He encounters starving villagers and children and helps them out. A few days later he saves a couple and their child from some thieves. They agree to escort the pair, Toruma and his wife Hayuna, to the capitol of the territory, where Toruma’s cousin is the Earl. Satou quickly becomes aware that it will soon become dangerous in the area and sends the majority of his party away to safety while keeping Pochi and Arisa with him. He ends up saving the entire territory and ends up becoming an honorary knight, and is now known as Chevalier Pendragon.

Plot: This arc of chapters continues with their journey and has Satou performing some really outlandish feats again. Frankly this is probably one of my favorite arcs.

Characters: We get introduced to some new characters, but my favorite is probably Sera because of how kind she is. Satou is still Satou though and is going through his journey with as much leisure as he possibly can.

Overall: A great arc, if you aren’t reading the series yet you really ought to give it a shot.
