This week for Bookish Wednesday I’m covering a Young Adult series I stumbled across recently. It’s Schooled in Magic, Book 01 in the series, by Christopher G. Nuttall!
Plot Synopsis: Emily is a teenage girl pulled from our world into a world of magic and mystery by a necromancer who intends to sacrifice her to the dark gods. Rescued in the nick of time by an enigmatic sorcerer, she discovers that she possesses magical powers and must go to Whitehall School to learn how to master them. There, she learns the locals believe that she is a “Child of Destiny,” someone whose choices might save or damn their world … a title that earns her both friends and enemies. A stranger in a very strange land, she may never fit into her new world …
Plot: This isn’t the most inventive novel, in fact it’s got so many standard tropes it’s kind of bad. However it still managed to catch my eye because the lead character is a girl, rather than the typical guy, and because she realizes how much of a stereotype the situations she gets into are. I won’t say it’s even close to the level of Brandon Sanderson in terms of quality, but it’ll beat the snot out of Twilight any day.
Characters: Emily is a pretty smart teenage girl, but she realizes that she is way over head and that she really should’ve been paying more attention in school during science and history classes. I enjoy her as a lead character, because she is always questioning herself and her actions, sometimes overly so, but still manages to adapt to the new world she finds herself in. The rest of the cast is interesting as well, especially Void, who seems to be a very mysterious man.
Overall: Not the best book, it’s still way above most Young Adult novels in terms of quality. A great read for teens and adults if they enjoy Fantasy.
For those who like: Fantasy, Action, Drama, Lead Character with Gumption, Good Plot, Great Cast of Characters.
Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
